Pandora Hires Sculpts

My plans for bringing another episode out before the end of January may be interrupted. Well, they are interrupted. I'm just getting back from visiting family for the holidays AND I am preparing to move this week. So, just getting back up and running will be delayed. On another note my laptop is giving me a little trouble off and on. Things are lagging that shouldn't be and I'm getting a lot more frozen moments than I would like to admit. I'm delicately troubleshooting the issues, but as you may already know, it's very time consuming. Now I do also use a pc "frankensteined" wannabe workstation, but I reserve it for rendering really. It's really what it's good for. I'll need to tweak and update hardware and software to really have it perform as a workstation. So, to sum this up there will be delays. I will keep them as short as possible.

As I continue through the pipeline for the project and deal with other issues I ran across a 3D sculpt I had created for the original Pandora idea. Back then I was allowing myself to put Pandora together as if I was a multi-million dollar studio with an army of clones to handle the workload. The design was for one of the main characters of what is now the Prologue. The character is quite different now, but I wanted to share this image of a hires sculpt and concept. Interesting enough, I am also working with a experimental process that may allow me to kick out some higher detailed animation (really excited about that).

Pandora Wonky Prologue Process

 Alrighty then!

Finally I can look back on the full completion of the Prologue for Pandora web series. I am happy with the knowledge I gained from tackling this project, BUT I have to admit I am not so warm and cozy with the final look. However, it came to a point that I needed to get something out there! Get it all started. There are people who would say don't be afraid to stop and start over if necessary. I agree somewhat with that. However, I think of  cartoon series that started out "not fully realized" (Simpsons and Family Guy come to mind). In time the process was enhanced and the product became what it is now. So now was the time to get things started for me.

Oh ya, if you haven't viewed the Pandora prologue yet you can follow these links:

 Thanks for checking them out!

Like I mentioned, the learning process was good and is what made it all worthwhile. I'm already into the pre-production for the first chapter of Pandora. Lots of methods have changed up to make sure this gets out there quickly and the story and my vision is intact. Right now, I'm a one artist studio handling all the different task to bring this together. My process has to be customized for this to work. From what I learned, going into pre production, production and post separately will not work well. For now Pandora remains a part time project. So unless I want to bring out an episode every two years. I need to handle aspects of each of these phases together. I also need to tighten estimated time budgets for each task.

So stay tuned to see how that process looks. I'll post updates as much as I can. Another big change is the format for Chapter 1. The chapter will be in the form of a motion comic. There will be animation in certain spots but the motion comic will provide a good template for illustrating the information of the first chapter. Also, I don't have voice talents and  lipsynch animation is too much to take on right now.

Here is a look on how I handled the prologue:

Preproduction
- I created the script and continually refined it as preproduction went on. Major issue came when I had to either keep dialogue in the script or revise to show no dialogue. I chose to revise with no dialogue. I am REALLY impressed now with creators who don't use dialogue and need to convey the story with gestures, mood lighting, and camera angles (etc). Didn't come out like I wanted. Here is a look at some of my pre production steps

- I sketched and scribbled out rough concepts and storyboards. Also revised the script based on visual ideas. Many ideas where brought to a full concept and unfortunately not used.
roughsketch of refugee spaceship

rough sketch of chanting shaman

rough storyboards
- I created a very crude (I'm talking croood) animatic. Then I created the hires 3D models of all characters, props, vehicles, and environments. This step is where I spent most of the preproduction time.

- I created low res models with all maps and rigs for production. I made a lot of mistakes here especially with hair and referencing the models. Learned A LOT with all the mistakes. It was painful needing to update maps and finding out they didn't render properly. I learned to get the maps RIGHT or pay dearly later. My rendering limitation kept me from using displacement maps or textures with too many layers.

Maps I created for one character

This gives you a little insight to all that went into my one man pre production. Next was what I consider prodiction. I won't bore you with the production and post (If you are interested send me a message). So busy and so much to do but this time it will be smoother and more manageable for a one part time artist to handle.

Pandora Web series Production

Busy busy busy!....as I'm sure you can imagine so I apologize in advance for scattered updates. Make sure to check this project on Patreon as well... here's the link:

I'm in the midst of uploading the Prologue fully to my Youtube channel
 here's that link:
https://www.youtube.com/user/OutlawHue1

It's taking a bit longer than expected. Learning a ton of efficient habits for post production work as I finish this portion. This will definitely help out when it's time to go into post production for Chapter 1.

In case you missed it here is the second part to the Prologue.

Each episode I upload will be around 2-5 minutes in length. This is subject to change as time goes on but so far that works. It keeps me from devoting too much time to this project which is a side project (for now). I do hope and I am going through steps to make this more fulltime, but for now it's slow and steady as we go.

Personal Project Numero X Completed

A week ago....or maybe more I posted WIP process of Wolverine having beserk issues. I since completed the personal project. I was thinking about pushing it more and rigging and animating him BUT that would become a time consuming project that I don't have time for. So I finished the model and textured him.

I personally like the 80s Wolverine character from Xmen comics. I really enjoyed reading the comics when he was a short and hairy animal looking brawler. He had a serious addiction to cigars and his own PTSD which resulted in the Beserker. His brown and tan uniform I chose but I changed it up a bit. Mainly, because the feel the colors work better this way.

Did a study f a tiger. Such amazing animals. Couldn't help feel a wee bit hatred for the senseless slaughter of these awesome animals. Worked my way from the musculo-skeletal system to the final look. See the whole process here:

Mental Ray Agony Maya Style

I'm nearly losing sleep over Pandora. As I render away I keep getting slapped with error messages and incomplete renders. It's like watching the referee interference in a basketball game. AAAArrgghhh! Gimme' a break already!!

Hours of troubleshooting are turning into days...and days into weeks. One good note is I am learning some workarounds for rendering. Also learning what should have been done in the first place. Right now I am relying heavily on workarounds. The scenes I have are too big and complicated to start tinkering around with exporting to new scenes and messing with nodes and what not. Most of these tips are from "googling" different variations of mental ray issues. Hopefully, these tips can help out another artist with MR render issues:

- Troubleshoot MR by rendering from command line (for Windows). Don't know how to do it...there is a script out there to pretty much do it for you.

- Change as many texture files from PSD to TGA (if possible). My scenes are pretty populated with models ...doing this would take some serious time.

- Bake down all the stuff you can (nDynamics, animation, models etc)

- When all else fails render animation from the Maya single frame render window with a script. This definitely saved me in a few intstances.

- Make sure all other programs that can be turned off are off while rendering.

- You get errors...espacially MR fails...shut down Maya...then open and try again (I know a real pain in the ass!)

- If you referenced....prepare for heart ache. Anything can be off in reference files do your best to troubleshoot the original file. If all else fails import the reference into the scene and work from there.

- Delete your preference MEL (smart move would be to copy and place it somewhere else before deleting). Sometimes Maya likes doing wierd things and saving it here...soo it can wierd you out over and over again.

There are more but these are the ones I have seen the most positive reaction from rendering. Hope it works out for you...happy rendering *gritting teeth

Hair Dynamic Solution for Pandora

I had a little trouble working out the hair for the characters of the Pandora CGfilm. At first I went all out. I mean I had dynamic, bouncier than necessary hair for my characters, that looked silky shiny with lights were added. Well, to render one frame of one of these characters took a little over five minutes. I have over 700 frames for one scene. Painfully slow but what great hair they had.

I re-evaluated the use of hair to the overall story and I found I will use a some dynamic hair, but fill in with "hair planes". I'm still working out the kinks on this but I now have hair rendering down to a little over two minutes per character...per frame (sigh).

I am Pregnant with Pandora

Over 12 years ago I begin writing and formulating a story I now call Pandora. It has changed over the years. At one point I actually lost most of the script thanks to a computer crash. It's now at a point where it is bubbling over and REALLY needs to be told. Over the years I have had time to really build this story and research and edit and revise and rebuild. It is sooo ready to come to life. I will keep you up to date with the development as I go. If you have not seen the original teaser you can view it here:
